What to write in a pet memorial
Ideas and example words for a pet memorial message, plaque or card, when you don't know what to say.
When you sit down to write a few words for a pet who has died, it can be hard to start. Nothing seems big enough. The good news is that the best messages are usually small and specific.
Start with what only they did
Instead of trying to sum up their whole life, think of one thing that was completely them: how they tilted their head, the sock they always stole, the way they greeted you. Specific memories feel truer than big words.
A simple shape that works
Try three short parts: who they were, what you'll miss, and what you want to tell them.
"Our gentle giant. We'll miss your snoring by the fire every night. Thank you for being so patient with all of us."
Short messages people write
- "You were my best friend for fourteen years. Thank you for every single one."
- "The house is quiet without you. Run free, little one."
- "You taught us that every day is worth a wagging tail."
- "Forever on my lap, forever in my heart."
- "Goodnight, sweet girl. We'll leave the light on."
- "Small paws, huge heart. We love you."
Writing to a friend whose pet died
If you're leaving a message for someone else's pet, you don't need to fix anything. Say their pet's name, share a memory if you have one, and let them know you're thinking of them.
"I'll always remember Max running to meet me at the gate. Sending you so much love."
Whatever you write, it is enough. They knew they were loved.
