How long does grief for a pet last?

There is no timetable for missing a pet. What grief often looks like in the first days, weeks and months, and when to ask for help.

One of the most common questions after losing a pet is "when will this stop hurting?". The honest answer is that grief doesn't follow a schedule. But it does change, and knowing what is normal can make it easier to carry.

The first days

The first days are often the sharpest. You may keep expecting to hear them, see them at the door or reach for the leash. Sleep and appetite can be off. Crying suddenly, in the shop or at work, is completely normal.

The first weeks

Life starts to move again, and that can feel strange, even unfair. The routines you shared are usually where it hurts most: walk times, feeding times, the evening on the sofa. Many people find it helps to keep one small ritual for them, like lighting a candle at the time you used to walk together.

The first months

For most people the pain becomes less constant. You start to remember the funny things before the sad ones. Then a smell, a song or a dog on the street that looks like them can bring it all back for a moment. That is not going backwards. It is how love works.

Birthdays and anniversaries

Special days can be hard even years later. Planning something small for those days helps: a walk somewhere you loved together, a favourite treat donated to a shelter, a candle for them.

When to ask for help

If after several weeks you can't sleep, eat or get through your day, or you feel hopeless, please talk to a doctor or someone you trust. Free pet loss support lines exist in many countries, and you can find a helpline near you at findahelpline.com.
